Name (Age): Mandy Rudolph (28)

Company/Title: Glens Falls Family YMCA / Human Resources Director

Family: Locally, my family is everyone I see daily at the Y!

Brief Resume: I earned my BA from Ithaca College and my Masters in Labor and Policy Studies from SUNY Empire State. I volunteered as an AmeriCorps VISTA in Philadelphia before moving to the Adirondack Region in 2007, where I was hired at the Y as the Human Resource Assistant. Since then, my responsibilities have continued to expand, and I became the Human Resources Director in January of 2010.

What do you do?: My job duties include coordinating staffing, employee benefits, performance management and training. Working in Human Resources for the Y, I strive to ensure that employees are given the tools they need to succeed in their positions in order to provide a positive experience and a superior quality of programming to every person who enters our facility. I enjoy working alongside a mission-driven staff that is devoted to strengthening the community.

Education: MA Labor and Policy Studies (SUNY Empire State); BA Studio Art (Ithaca College); High School in Syracuse, NY (Jamesville-Dewitt)

Community Involvement: I volunteer at special events to benefit the Glens Falls Family YMCA’s annual campaign, which provides scholarships to ensure that no one is turned away for an inability to pay for memberships or programs. I’m also an American Red Cross Instructor for Community CPR/AED and First Aid. I’m always up for volunteering my time to fundraisers for local organizations.

Hobbies: Being active, especially outside. I’ve never been very competitive, but give me a bike path, hiking trail, or body of water, and I’m happy. Also love to read, paint and spend time with friends and family.

Career aspiration in high school: Let’s just say I didn’t know I’d end up in HR when I was in high school! An extremely winding road, leading past art, writing and education, led me to the decision to pursue a career in HR.

First job: As a high school sophomore - customer service and small floral arrangements at Coleman Florist in Dewitt, NY.

How did you become a Human Resources Director?: A human resources director at a previous job inspired me to look into the profession for myself. I saw the importance of her position within the organization and thought the job of supporting employees and helping to create productive work environments would be a good fit for me, so I began applying for entry level HR positions and enrolled at SUNY Empire State to obtain a Masters degree that concentrated on the field.

Five years from now I will be: Specializing in workforce training and development.

Why do you choose to work/live in area?: As my career and appreciation for the area have grown while working at the Y, my loyalty to the area has grown as well. Although I’m a transplant, I’ve built a network of support both at and outside of work – and I enjoy experiencing all the region has to offer because I’ve found people to share my experiences!
